This weekend’s Horse Betting Program – Belmont Stakes & Royal Ascot – nj.com
Horse racing is back in a big way with a number of major horse betting racetracks running daily cards. The month of June is highlighted by the Belmont Stakes in the US, the Royal Ascot Gold Cup in Great Britain and the Unicorn Stakes, the Japanese road to Kentucky Derby.
Since mid-March, nothing has been normal in the sports betting world due to the coronavirus. The traditional order of the Triple Crown racing series for the top three-year old thoroughbreds in the nation has been turned upside down.
The crown jewel of this three-race series is the Kentucky Derby. Normally run on the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs in Louisville, the 2020 ‘Run for the Roses’ will take place on Sept. 5.
Following the Preakness Stakes as the second leg, the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York has always been considered the toughest test of the three races at 1 ½ miles on dirt. This year, the Belmont Stakes will be the first Triple Crown event at a shortened length of 1 1/8 miles.
The total prize money for this year’s race has been lowered to $1 million which is a half a million less than normal. The 2020 Belmont Stakes will highlight Belmont Park’s race card on Saturday, June 20 at 5:45 p.m. ET. Read more on how to steam the race with TVG.
