In the summer of 2018, the Supreme Court voted in favor of an appeal submitted by the state of New Jersey, to overturn a law called the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act. PASPA basically banned sports betting in all states except Nevada.
Getting rid of PASPA didn’t automatically make sports betting legal but it has given each state the authority to legalize it if they choose.
A growing number of states have already passed laws and started accepting sports wagers while more still are in various stages of legislation.
